Haridwar

A paradise for nature-lovers, It is first towns where Ganga emerges from the mountains to touch the plains. Haridwar is a city of temples and ashrams and its pious ambience envelops everyone. Haridwar is one of the four holy Indian cities that host the Kumbh Mela, a pious gathering of millions of Hindu devotees every 12 years. The Ardh Kumbh is organised here every six years. where people from across the India visit for pilgrimage and to take a holy dip into the holy river Ganges.

Rishikesh

Often nicknamed the “yoga capital of the world” has been the abode of innumerable yogis since ancient times who chose this place for sadhana. also known as the “place of sagas” is a spiritual town situated 24 kms upstream from Haridwar, at the confluence of the Chandrabhaga and Ganga. It is believed that God by the name of “Hrishikesh” had appeared as an answer to the hard penances by Rabhiya Rishi and henceforth the place derived its name.

Gaurikund

one of the holiest sites for Hindus, who come to take a dip in it. It is believed that taking a dip in the holy water of the pond will make a person pure. Surrounded by panoramic views, Gaurikund also serves as the starting point of the famous Kedarnath temple trek.

Kedarnath

one of the twelve jyotirlinga of Shiva. Which is most revered temple destinations of India, Kedarnath town is nestled in the mighty Garhwal Himalayas. The town, built around the revered Kedarnath temple, is located at an altitude of 3,580 m, near Chorabari glacier, which is the source of the Mandakini river.

Triyuginarayan

: It is believed to be the capital of Himavat. It was the venue of the celestial marriage of Shiva and Parvati, during the Satya Yuga, witnessed in the presence of the holy fire that still burns eternally in front of the temple in a Havana-kund or Agni-kund, a four-cornered fireplace on the ground.

Ukhimath

The land where the wedding of Usha and Anirudh, grandson of Lord Krishna was solemnized. It is also a famous pilgrimage center and known for its ancient temples dedicated to Usha, Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Aniruddha and Mandhata.

Badrinath

Considered as the abode of Lord Vishnu, Badrinath is among the holy shrines of the char Dham. located at an elevation of around 3,100 m. Located in the Garhwal Himalayas, on the banks of the Alaknanda river, this sacred town lies between Nar and Narayana mountain ranges. The temple is believed to have been established by sage Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century.

Yamunotri

Temple dedicated to the goddess Yamuna and is located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, India. According to Hindu mythology, Yamunotri is considered the source of the river Yamuna and is one of the four sacred shrines in India's Char Dham pilgrimage.

Gangotri

It is one of the char dhams, which are considered an important pilgrimage for Hindus. It is the highest temple dedicated to Goddess Ganga. The holy River Ganges originates from the Gangotri glacier, located here, and is called Bhagirathi.

The five prayags

These five places, in descending order of river convergence, are Vishnuprayag, Nandaprayag, Karnaprayag, Rudraprayag and Devprayag. Devotees from across the country visit the sites as it is believed that taking a dip in the water in these five spots cleanses the soul and advances them a step closer to moksha.

Travel Tips : Do’s & Don’ts

Do’s

  • At least a month before the CHARDHAM /DODHAM Yatra, it is advisable to start preparatory exercises: Even a brisk walk of about 4 to 5 km per day would be beneficial. Breathing exercises like Pranayama would help combat the lack of sufficient oxygen at high altitudes.
  • Ensure you are physically and mentally fit to perform the journey as the Yatra involves trekking at an altitude of 1,4000ft. Get yourself medically examined and certified fit for the journey.
  • Always drink packaged drinking water.
  • Eating boiled, cooked or fried food is a suggested rather than anything cold or raw. Avoid cold salads, raw vegetables, drinks with ice etc.
  • Always ensure you have some dry eatables like chocolates, milk powder, dry fruits, glucose powder, sugar, candies, honey, lemons etc. with you.
  • Registered pony walla, porter, dandy man may only be hired. They are available for prefixed tariffs.
  • When asking for directions, speak to shopkeepers, not pedestrians. Check with at least two persons or more.
  • Always respect local customs.
  • If you are carrying Digital Camera or Handy cam, do carry extra pair of battery, as there is no guarantee if there is electricity for charging you equipment.
  • Carry a small torch. It is essential equipment as lights can go off at any time.
  • Always carry a raincoat and an umbrella during travel.
  • Carry personal toilet items, they are very useful during the breaks in long journey of Dodham/Char Dham.
  • Pack a medical kit with painkillers, antibiotics, cough lozenges and medicines for cold and fever and any personal medication that your previous medical history may deem necessary. It is always better to consult a doctor and ask his/her opinions before choosing what medication to carry.
  • Do carry sufficient heavy woollens clothes including sweaters, woollen thermal body warmers, trousers, monkey caps, mufflers, wind cheaters, raincoats, sleeping bags, blankets, water proof shoes with sufficient grips, torch with sufficient batteries and walking sticks. Suggested clothing for ladies- Salwar Kamiz, pants or any other body hugging clothes & it is recommended to avoid wearing sarees.
  • Ensure that your luggage is waterproof.

Don’ts

  • Do not take rest at places where boards displaying caution are placed.
  • Do not take bath or clean your articles at /near water-bodies unless they are designated as Ghats for the same.
  • Do not take pictures if cameras are not allowed in any particular area and always respect customs of locals.
  • Do not throw wrappers of chocolates etc. on road or in the forest trek during journey.
  • Do not try to wash hands/ clothes/ bath in the rivers en-route your way.
  • Alcohol is strictly prohibited.
  • Do not overstrain on steep gradients.
  • Do not carry heavy Jewellery during journey.
