Different Rituals and Puja in Maha Kumbh 2025

The Maha Kumbh Mela is the largest religious congregation in India, attended by millions. The over month-long fair is marked by the construction of a massive tented township, complete with cottages, huts, platforms, civic facilities, administrative and security measures. It is organized immaculately by the government, the local authorities and the police. The mela is especially renowned for the presence of an extraordinary array of religious ascetics - sadhus and mahants - enticed from remote hideaways in forests, mountains and caves. Once astrologers have determined the propitious bathing time or Kumbhayog, the first to hit the water is by legions of Naga Sadhus or Naga Babas, who cover their naked bodies with ash and wear hair in long dreadlocks. The sadhus, who see themselves as guardians of the faith, approach the confluence at the scheduled time with all the pomp and bravado of a charging army.

1.Shahi Snan (Royal Bath)
The most significant ritual of Kumbh Mela is the Shahi Snan. This is when the sadhus (holy men and saints), take a dip in the sacred river at the earliest of dawn. It’s believed that bathing in the holy river during this time washes away all sins and brings blessings. The Shahi Snan is held on specific auspicious days, and it’s a grand spectacle with processions and traditional music.

2. Holy Bathing (Snan)
Apart from the Shahi Snan, devotees in millions also take a holy dip in the sacred river on various other days during the Kumbh fair. This age old ritual of holy bathing is believed to purify the soul and bring spiritual merit. Pilgrims come with deep faith and respect, hoping for a better life and a connection with the divine.

3. Puja and Havan (Prayers and Fire Rituals)
Throughout the Kumbh Mela 2025, you will observe puja, or prayer ceremonies, are being conducted. Pilgrims offer flowers, fruits, and various holy ingredients to the deity for seeking their blessings. Havan is a fire ritual, which is performed by priests and devotees to purify the environment and invoke divine energies.

8. Anointment (Tilak)
Many pilgrims after bath receive a tilak. Tilak is a mark on the forehead made with sandalwood paste or ash. This ritual is considered auspicious. This is a symbol of blessing and is often given by a sadhu or a priest.

9. Kalpavas
